Safely Brooding Your Silkie Chicks: Essential Tips for New Owners

Start by setting up a brooder box in a draft-free area, we like to use a shallow livestock water trough shown in our image above. For bedding, stick to puppy pads during those initial two weeks after hatching—they’re absorbent, easy to roll up for quick cleanup, and they prevent the chicks from ingesting small pieces of wood shavings  that can cause blockages. Keep an eye on chicks not growing at the same pace with the others. I like to give egg yoke to all the chicks if I notice any not growing at a slower pace. Egg yoke is full of vitamins.  Using a heat lamp or plate to maintain the warm side of your brooder to around 90-95°F in the first week, gradually decreasing by 5°F each week. Your brooder MUST have a cool side, preferably 70-75 degrees, to get away from the heat or you will overheat and kill your chicks. Monitor for signs of overheating or chilling: if chicks huddle under the heat source, it’s too cold; if they pant and spread out, they need less heat and more cool side. Only use non-medicated feed for Silkies and a crumble. For chick starter feed,  grind it up finely for the first 2 weeks. It makes it easier for them to eat and thrive.  Beyond bedding and feed, vitamins play a key role in boosting immunity and growth. Add a chick-specific electrolyte and vitamin supplement (like those with B vitamins and probiotics) to their water for the first few days after hatch, especially if they’ve traveled from our coop to yours (regardless of age, all should be given vitamins upon arrival—this helps combat shipping stress and prevents issues like pasty butt. Change water frequently to keep it fresh, and use shallow dishes or chick waterers to avoid drowning risks those first two weeks also.
