why can I not order a single juvenile?

When we first started selling our Silkie chicks, we allowed single juveniles to go to new homes alone. Some did fine. Others struggled badly.
We started getting messages from buyers asking for help with young birds in declining health. These chicks were having trouble fitting into the new flock. They were often bullied and left alone. As a result, they shut down and wasted away. (Who wouldn’t in that situation?)
This wasn’t fair to our birds. So we made a change. Now, all juveniles must go with a buddy. The results have been great. With a companion during quarantine and flock introduction, our young Silkies thrive. We no longer get those sad messages about depressed or failing birds.

Is shipping live birds safe?

We’ve never lost a juvenile or older bird during shipping. Unfortunately, we have lost some day-old chicks due to USPS delays. They no longer guarantee 1-2 day delivery on Express Mail like they used to.
Because of these problems, we stopped offering day-old chicks.
Now we ship chicks at 2–3 weeks old. They get a healthy head start here with us. Since making the switch, only one chick hasn’t arrived safely.
We also include water bottles in every shipment—this change has made the biggest difference in keeping birds healthy on arrival. On top of that, we pack plenty of feed in the box so they have food for the full 2–4 day journey.

How do you determine gender of your silkies?

We send in feather samples when the chicks have suitable feathers for testing, when Silkie chicks are about 5-6 weeks old, for DNA testing. This method is 99% accurate.
