While we mainly focus on creating new, gorgeous colors of Silkie chickens in our breeding program, we heavily focus on breeding for SOP type, large crests (head poofs) and dark skin.
We only allow friendly breeding roosters in our breeding program. Smaller hatches allows us to focus more time on hand taming our chicks before shipping them to their new homes.
We breed for all feather types and our Satins and Frizzles are all late generation Silkies, not barn yard mixes. We find our Satins to be some of our most gorgeous chickens.
Creating new, gorgeous colored silkies is what we love to do. We have put years into creating some of the colors that we now share with new homes across the USA and Alaska.
We have a breeding flock of 38 Silkies. Here is a look at our summer setup for our Silkies. Each coop was in the process of getting new mulch put down in this photo before re-attaching the runs. Our Silkies have a better view than we do!
For the winter, we bring our Silkies inside our 30×60 insulated shop. Our Iowa winters can be brutal and where we live, the wind gets pretty awful. We’ve lost toes in the past due to frostbite and that just isn’t fair to our Silkies. They love their cozy indoor space and we have a large fan for ventilation to keep everyone healthy. We will be building a permanent set-up in the shop winter 25/26, so they can be in there year round with outdoor runs attached. The side of the shop we would be building this on offers more shade for the summer and we will be able to make the runs more secure to prevent casualties from wildlife. We’ve lost full breeding pens to raccoon break ins and also Mink. This is incredibly heartbreaking to go through because these Silkies are very much our pets and loved.

Hi there! My name is Michelle, head chicken tender at Fluffy Bottoms Coop. Our Silkie story started about 5-6 years ago when we brought home our very first silkie named Muppet. He was a white silkie frizzle (learn about feather types here) rooster. At the time, we only had six Tractor Supply chicks who we loved very much and we didn’t realize how friendly a chicken could be until we got Muppet. He would bounce across the yard to come see us and escort us all over the property when we were outside. He was like a farm dog or cat! He loved to be held and we do believe he loved us as much as we loved him.
We quickly decided that we needed more silkies! Our issue was, we couldn’t find sexed Silkies and we really had no intention on breeding Silkies at this time. We just wanted more Muppets bouncing across the yard! We ended up ordering Silkie hatching eggs, so our kids (and us!) could experience hatching chicks. This was a lot of fun for all of us and suddenly, we found ourselves needing more colors of Silkies and we started ordering more eggs from all over the country that ended up being the foundation lines for the flock we now have today. While we focus on SOP type, we really find our joy in creating new fun colored silkies. There is just something about seeing all the fun colors bounce across our yard to come greet us that brings us so much joy!
Hatching Silkies is so fun for our kids, they get so excited when a new colors hatches! “MOOOOM!!! YOU HAVE TO COME LOOK AT THIS CHICK!!!!” Will echo through our house on hatching days and we really found a lot of joy seeing our boys so excited. Our boys are involved with helping care for and hand taming our chicks, so those sweet Silkies you receive from us have been well loved and snuggled by the time they reach you. We truly love our birds and enjoy them more than we thought possible. It’s funny, because my husband is the one who wanted chickens and it took him about two years to get me on board before we purchased our first chickens from Tractor Supply, 6 easter eggers!
Sharing the family picture we took quickly with our Tractor Supply chicks in our backyard, not realizing that these first chickens would lead to us starting Fluffy Bottom’s Coop. We loved those chickens, but it wasn’t until we brought Muppet home that we realized how friendly the Silkie breed could be and I am so thankful for my husband’s persistence in buying those feed store chicks in the beginning because that is how we started this journey!
Thank you for being here!
